How to Build a Culture of Planning and Purpose
Planning and purpose are essential to building a high-performing project culture—one capable of delivering high-value work quickly and reliably. Planning must be dynamic and resilient, enabling teams to adapt rapidly to new or unforeseen information. Purpose must be shared and meaningful, creating the trust and mutual support that turn coordination into true collaboration. When purpose is absent, dynamic planning efforts become chaotic. When planning is static, even strong shared purpose can lead to stagnation and inefficiency. Both are needed—and both have deep historical roots. In this session, Tom Richert of RisingTerrain draws from research and field experience to explore how project teams can tap the untapped potential of the Last Planner System® and develop practices that connect people to meaningful, shared purpose.
Learning Objectives:
1. Recognize how shared purpose and dynamic planning work together to create a high-performing project culture. Participants will examine how the absence of either shared purpose or adaptable planning can lead to project underperformance or chaos.
2.Explore historical and modern influences that shape purpose-driven project leadership. Drawing from traditions including Hōtoku thought, Self-Help philosophy, and Deming’s systems thinking, attendees will trace the roots of purpose alignment in Lean practices.
3. Apply structured practices for uncovering personal strengths, building shared identity, and aligning team values with project impact.
Through tools such as purpose alignment conversations, strength mapping, and values articulation, participants will learn practical methods for connecting people to meaningful project outcomes.
