Introduction to Lean Construction: An Operations Perspective

for Trades and Contractors

Lean Construction seeks to eliminate all forms of waste from the value stream. It aims to improve all processes (both field and office), which reduces schedule time and also costs, all while improving quality and morale.  Come learn how to identify and eliminate waste from your processes through hands on simulations designed specifically for the construction industry. Topics covered: waste vs. value, push vs. pull, flow, problem solving, schedule reliability, etc. Tools discussed: value stream mapping, spaghetti diagrams, etc. Hands-on simulation: Parade of Trades.

Speakers:

  • Robert Warcup, PhD - UVU Construction Technologies
In 2007 Rob was fortunate to take part in a Lean construction pilot program and to write the playbook on Lean operations for a national construction firm.  He quickly realized the power of Lean as his team saved $16 Million through identifying and eliminating waste from their processes.  Since that time, Rob completed a PhD that emphasized Lean construction and currently teaches construction management at Utah Valley University.  He developed a Lean project management course in 2011 that he teaches yearly.
  • David Medina - Okland Construction
David took Rob’s course as a student at UVU. David now implements Lean construction concepts successfully on his projects for Okland Construction.
