This presentation will discuss the results of an LCI-funded research project on Construction Workers Mental Health and the link to Lean tools and practices. Data from a survey distributed across the United States indicates that at least a third of the respondents indicated that they are facing elevated levels that they had not expected when joining the industry, whereas a similar number of respondents shared that they fear that level of stress they are facing would make them physically ill. On the bright side, the study supports a characteristic that is well-known in the construction industry: that workers feel that they belong to a team, as well as that they believe that they are valued by their group and connected to it. The presentation will also discuss the Lean practices that appear to have a more pronounced impact on stress and depression levels, belongingness, and other indicators used in the study. The results will inform practitioners about practices that appear to be more correlated with promoting worker well-being.

Thais Alves, PhD, is currently the AGC - Paul S. Roel Chair in Construction Engineering and Management at San Diego State University. Her work is focused on the use of lean production to improve the performance of delivery systems, and improving Engineering education through the use of serious games and initiatives to broaden access and diversity in Engineering. For over 15 years, she has been teaching, mentoring students, researching and collaborating with construction companies towards the dissemination and implementation of lean. She has been part of San Diego LCI core group since 2010.
